Chatterbox Comment : Saturday 14th October

Food for Thought ……

Are you aware that, since the original planning application was submitted to East Lothian Council in May, almost 5 months have passed during which time the SSC has submitted numerous amendments to its plans & employed additional consultants to support its case.

You were given only 10-days to review most of this additional information. During that 10-day period, the SSC then continued to file even more documentation online, the last of which was logged just 48-hours before the closing deadline for public comment.

Do you regard this as fair & reasonable, particularly considering all the controversy which the SSC proposals have caused within the local, national and international community ?

Now let’s return to our Petition Respondents within our LOCAL, NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL community to benefit from their opinions

Petition Comment : North Berwick, 24th September
This is just a step too far! We’ve already lost the Sun shelter, where the elderly could sit on a not-so-warm day, free of charge. How much more do the Seabird Centre require in order to completely ruin this area? If the current arrangement isn’t viable, why spend ££££’s on another glorified exhibition hall?

Petition Comment : Cupar, 12th September
North Berwick Harbour area is one I have known and loved since the ‘60s. Whilst one should not stand in the way of progress, some things are worth protecting and, without going into the lengths of a full environmental and business impact report, enough is enough! Let’s not destroy what we have, (even further), as we will never get it back.

Petition Comment : Australia, 18th August
North Berwick Harbour is beautiful and shouldn’t be over-developed. It doesn’t sound like much due diligence has been done on the impact of the new development. My parents live in North Berwick and I visit the Harbour whenever I return – please don’t stuff it up for some short term £!

Petition Comment : New Hope, Pennsylvania, USA, 20th September
It defies common sense to allow the proposed blocky, disproportionate Marine Centre building on the North Berwick Harbour front. Allowing this development will destroy our shared cultural and historic landscape/seascape view of North Berwick. In addition, North Berwick is already busting at the seams from parking problems. Right now, it takes longer to park than it does to shop on High Street ! (I love shopping at locally owned treasures like Anderson’s Butcher Shop, Bostock Bakery & Steampunk Coffee.) Why does this feel more like non-profit/charity empire building, rather than an environmental education centre? I’m curious as to what other towns were considered that would benefit from having the Marine Centre?

Chatterbox Comment : Monday 9th October
Monday morning & it’s back to business. So, let’s hear what our respondents are saying about the SSC’s “business case” for further expansion into the Harbour area.

Petition Comment : North Berwick, 6th August
There is no demonstrable business case being evidenced for the proposed investment by the SSC or an options appraisal to consider the best location for the project in the event that a notional need is justified. These are the fundamental stages of any public or private sector investment proposal & should be applied here. Needs not want !

Petition Comment : North Berwick, 6h August
I agree & understand the SSC needs to move with the times to remain viable & current, especially in providing additional educational space. I do not feel however they offer a strong enough business plan to say how their plans will generate any more income or visitors to justify such a massive, intrusive programme of building works that will drastically alter pre-SSC freely publicly accessed historic buildings, such as the Sun lounge, just so they can continue to use it for office space. I am also concerned building works to achieve the new extensions will greatly hinder & restrict local views, access & space for the many groups & charities (run successfully on limited budgets, few staff & temporary buildings) that also use the harbour. In short, if their figures for paying visitors to their discovery centre are low now, (if compared to other North Berwick attractions/charities that run on a fraction of the staff & annual budget), how will a massive increase in footspace address this?

Petition Comment : North Berwick, 6th August
I don’t believe the SSC should be allowed to bully its way into change that isn’t needed or wanted.

Petition Comment : North Berwick, 7th August
The Harbour is the tourist attraction, not the seabird centre. The SSC are not viable !

Petition Comment : Dunoon, 13th August
I wish to protect the eco diversity of an historic area that has continued to draw tourism to the town for hundreds of years. A development of the scale proposed will permanently alter the town and have severe consequences on the residents, young & old, who use the area as a safe place to congregate. An overdevelopment on this scale will be catastrophic for this area’s natural beauty and would serve only to raise the profits of the Seabird Centre café !

Food for Thought ……

No visit to the Panto would feel complete without some good old audience participation, would it ?

When the SSC launched, in 2000, it had a target of 60,000 paying visitors, which they claim to have achieved. Today they entertain less than 15,000. So, do they actually need a bigger building ?

Seabird Centre’s response, “OH YES WE DO !”
Audience’s response, “…………………………………” (please complete this well-known phrase)

Here’s what some of our Petition Respondents are saying within our LOCAL, NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL community ……………

Petition Comment : North Berwick, 11th August
Expand the Seabird Centre if you must, but not with an irrelevant tower and pointless bridge.

Petition Comment : London, England, 6th August
It’s a monstrosity !

Petition Comment : Little Kingshill, England, 6th August
This proposal if it were implemented would be devastating for the harbour of North Berwick. This is over-development of the small harbour which is totally unsuitable for the proposed NMC.

Petition Comment : Haddington, 6th August
I think that the harbour needs to be retained the way it is. The Seabird Centre, in my opinion, is an ugly monstrosity. No more please !

Petition Comment : Peebles, 22nd August
The way the harbour is now is perfect & over developing the area will ruin such iconic views. It would be devastating to destroy the beauty of North Berwick.

Petition Comment : Beaverton, Oregon, USA, 22nd August
I care about beauty on earth, wherever it is. They can put their development somewhere else.

Seabird Centre’s Panto Season is in full swing – could “Jack & the Beanstalk” be the inspiration for their proposed Viewing Tower ? Curtain Up for more respondent’s reviews ………

Petition Comment : Kinghorn, Fife, 11th August
If it goes ahead we’ll be able to see the Seabird Centre from Fife !!! Please stop this crazy scheme from changing North Berwick harbour forever.

Petition Comment : North Berwick, 20th August
The harbour area is for everyone not just the Seabird Centre. The plans for the development seem intrusive and dominating. I wouldn’t want an imposing building looming down as we enjoy the harbour. Looks like it will cast a literal and figurative dark shadow over the harbour area.

Petition Comment : North Berwick, 10th August
The height of the buildings proposed will significantly block the low southern winter sun, creating a darker & colder harbour area. This is an important local recreation area, a tourist area & a working harbour & this will make it less attractive to its detriment … At the moment the Seabird Centre has a visual scale in keeping with the area. It is an impressive building, but not an overly imposing one. This low-key aspect is in keeping with the visual environment. Increasing the size of the building will increase its visual impact in a way that is not in keeping with this… I have looked at the planning application but have not been able to find an adequate business plan to justify the stated need for this development.

Petition Comment : Haddington, 7th August
The proposal looks ghastly and out of place.

October’s golden days of Autumn – gateway to roaring fires & the promise of Winter festivities ahead. But, has the Pantomime Season arrived early with the Seabird Centre’s sensational new production of “Beauty & The Beast”? Read the respondents’ reactions to the SSC’s design proposals …………

Petition Comment : North Berwick, 6h August
It’s so bloody shocking !

Petition Comment : Dirleton, 6th August
Unsympathetic nature of the architect’s design and blatant disregard for the historic and aesthetic importance of the location.

Petition Comment : North Berwick, 7th August
A completely inappropriate and unnecessary development which would be terminally ruinous to the character of the central part of the beauty of North Berwick. Ridiculous !

Petition Comment : East Linton, 8th August
The proposed structure is not in keeping with the existing harbour infrastructure, the lift tower is positively ugly, and existing open views of Craigleith, the Lamb and up to Fidra are obstructed.

Petition Comment : Tranent, 11th August
The harbour and area is beautiful. No one wants that ruined and taken away by an ugly new building. Leave it as it is.

Chatterbox Comment : Saturday 30th September

Food for Thought ……

Scottish Seabird Centre’s management & trustees regularly quote that they host some 270,000 visitors per annum & have allowed the SSC to be named as one of Scotland’s Top 10 Paid Visitor Attractions each year since 2009 by Visit Scotland.

Significant & impressive statistics indeed!

However, you may be interested to know that analysis of the SSC’s accounts reveals they have less than 15,000 paying visitors per year to their Discovery Centre, a fact they have confirmed verbally.

So, where do these figures really place them in Scotland’s paid visitor attraction league tables & what implication should this have for their business case for expansion?

Petition Comment : Tranent, 13th August
I don’t want this area changed and ruined. Move the Seabird Centre to where it can expand. There is plenty of coastline where parking could be put in with the plan.

Petition Comment : Bridgewater, 6th August
It’s far too big & obtrusive and why should they increase in size just to try and get more funding to pay salaries, etc ?

Petition Comment : Renfrew, 8th August
Whilst a national sea-life centre is an absolute must, it should be built somewhere else that reclaims abandoned industrial land & not on a site of historical significance. It’s not rocket science is it …….

Petition Comment : Tucson, Arizona, USA, 8th August
We’ve visited this beautiful harbour. It would be so easy to destroy its character with careless development.

Chatterbox Comment : Wednesday 27th September
Petition respondents evaluate the economic reasons for the Seabird Centre’s desire for expansion & try to understand the real motivation behind their proposals.

Petition Comment : Gullane, 7th August
The impact to the ancient harbour would be devastating. I think this is a very poorly considered proposal based on profit rather than the impact to marine life and the wishes of the locals. The Yacht Club and most residents were here long before the Seabird Centre and, whilst a great thing, the Seabird Centre should not be allowed to expand any further at the detriment to locals. North Berwick is now overdeveloped beyond its capacity as it is. The potential loss of the Fringe by the Sea, even if a different location was found, would not be the same. Please do not allow this to go ahead and be swayed by those seeking profit. It will not increase jobs significantly in the area enough to allow it to go ahead.

Petition Comment : East Linton, 10th August
The business plan of the Seabird Centre fails to stack up and the proposed development, an eyesore, would spoil the picturesque and traditional harbour.

Petition Comment : London, 10th August
The harbour needs to be protected from commercial greed.

Petition Comment : Newcastle, 14th August
I believe that the SSC already has too much of a valuable public area and is mainly about a Coffee Shop !
